#9: If everything fails
Let’s face it, the task of integrating with the Danes is too overwhelming and you are about to fail miserably!
Not saying everything was all for nothing, because we both know that you have learned a lot about yourself with all your efforts, but you never really got to understand the weird people of the north…
But don’t give up just yet! Have you tried Folke Højskole (Danish: Folk High School)?
Imagine this: You are with nice people all the time. Every meal is made for you. There are NO EXAMS!
In Denmark it very common for young adults to take a gap year after normal high school before starting at university, and while some work to save up money for later others spend some of the hard earned money, traveling or attending Højskole. In simple words I would call it:
“Boarding school of life education”
You don’t get any formal degree, but you learn new skills and you grow as a person.
And while this is mainly for Danish Citizens there are some institutions that specialize in Danish Language and Culture for newcomers as well.
There are many Højskoler in Denmark, but I have only attended the one at Kalø, where I had 4 months of Outdoor Ranger course, which I now try to make a part of my living.
